Airport bureaucracy is nothing new. Taking off shoes and belts, getting your bag weight right, and having that all-important boarding pass are a given these days. But it seems there is new reason to be sure to get your name absolutely right. Airports and airlines don’t waste time when it comes to identity. After all, the John Smiths of the world can always get mixed up.

Recently, one passenger was turned down for not writing her middle name. Ashley Collins was at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, heading to Iceland on WOW Air. When she reached the ticket counter, Collins was denied boarding. According to Travel and Leisure, Ashley’s passport didn’t match her boarding pass. The only thing that was missing from the ticket was her middle name.

“Once we got to the front, the lady said to her supervisor, ‘It’s another one’”, Collins said, Travel and Leisure reports. “She handed me my passport and... I was denied boarding the flight”. She joined 11 other passengers who were denied boarding the day before. Left with no other choice, Collins had to buy another ticket the next day, as well as pay a $23 to change her name. Marie-Anyk Côté, a WOW Air spokesperson, explained that “we encourage all passengers to use the names as they appear on the official identification they will use when traveling".

There aren’t many airlines that require a middle name. However, America’s TSA Secure Flight Program has introduced stricter guidelines for identification and documents. For your future flights, it’s recommended you live up to your name and write the whole thing out.
