The ancient Romans were followers of paganism, a religion with a variety of different gods and goddesses. Each played an important role in different aspects of their everyday lives. The Roman Empire was primarily a polytheistic civilization, which meant that people recognized and worshiped multiple deities.
The Romans adopted a lot of the Greek gods into their own religion, combining them with the older Etruscan gods that the Romans worshiped before. However, as the years went by and with the emergence of Christianity, their polytheistic religion started to slowly decline, eventually disappearing completely.
