Researchers say that dementia rates are increasing in China faster than anywhere else in the world.

Daoying Geng and her team at Fudan University in China analyzed dementia cases in different countries for the time period from 1990 until 2021, using a World Health Organization database to gather information. As per their findings, the number of dementia sufferers around the world doubled during these decades, rising from 22 million in 1990 to around 57 million in 2021. However, in China, the number of cases quadrupled, increasing from around four million to almost 17 million over the same time period.

The researchers discovered that the main reason for such disparity between China and the rest of the world was population growth, which influenced the final outcome of the findings.

Overall, according to research published in January 2025, the number of dementia cases is set to rise in the coming decades. Indeed, the number of people in the US alone that are diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease is expected to double by 2060, reaching around one million cases per year.

Although there are genetic factors that influence the likelihood of a person developing dementia, there are also certain lifestyle choices we can make, particularly during mid-life, if we want to reduce the risk.
