Instagram users beware
Foodies are all over Instagram, and it's undoubtedly changing how we view food and nutrition.
Trends on the internet grab users' attention, like rainbow croissants or unicorn frappuccinos. Then these aesthetically appealing products are sold en masse, with no regard to their nutritional value or lack thereof.
There is also the issue of people promoting healthy lifestyles on social media. These individuals push the perception of what constitutes a balanced diet, when it may not actually be that healthy.
Dietitian Libby Parker, R.D. warns against fads like all-fruit diets. She told Shape Magazine, "This type of diet looks very healthy and beautiful in photos, but is really nutritionally void of fat, protein, and many minerals, and can be dangerous for diabetics with high levels of carbohydrate and not much protein or fat to balance it out."
Instagram is often a catalyst for starting drastic food trends that too often promote diets that can have negative health implications. Parker warns against detoxes and cleanses, which she deems as "totally unnecessary," because our kidneys and liver detoxify our bodies all on their own. Not to mention juicing and diet teas can cause dizziness, muscle weakness, and high blood sugar.
Basically, don't believe everything you read (or all the images you see). Though food shots on Instagram may be pretty, all that glitters is not gold.
