European Council President António Costa recently said that the countries like Albania and Montenegro could join the EU as early as 2030, should they implement all the required reforms. Costa further mentioned the importance of enlarging the EU bloc, emphasizing the strategic need to expand to the Western Balkans region.

"Russia's invasion of Ukraine has sped up the accession process for Ukraine and Moldova, so it is not fair to the countries of the Western Balkans to be overtaken by Ukraine and Moldova, and this will push them to move faster with reforms," Costa said in an interview with media.

The European Council president is about to embark on a tour of the region, aiming to visit six Western Balkan countries: Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania.

In reality, any European country can apply for EU membership, but the process is long and involves rigorous assessments. While the EU primarily considers European nations, geopolitical and economic factors also influence eligibility.

Recently, there has been online speculation about whether Canada could join the EU, especially after tensions with the US. Advocates argue that Canada's European-style health care, bilingual culture, and NATO participation make it a strong candidate, though its geographical and cultural distance from Europe presents a significant obstacle.
