Jeremiah Burke, an Irishman, composed a heartfelt message while the Titanic was sinking. He enclosed it in a bottle of holy water gifted by his mother before he departed Ireland for a new life in the US.

After one year, the bottle arrived at Dunkettle, not far from his family home. The enclosed message stated, "From Titanic, goodbye all, Burke of Glanmire, Cork."

RMS Lusitania -

In 1915, the Lusitania was struck by a German torpedo and allegedly sank within approximately eight minutes. Apparently, this brief period allowed a passenger to hastily scribble a note and enclose it in a bottle.

The message stated, "Still on deck with a few people. The last boats have left. We are sinking fast. Some men near me are praying with a priest. The end is near. Maybe this note will..." but the note ended there.

Auschwitz message -

A message from 1944 was discovered in a wall at the Auschwitz concentration camp in 2009, dating back to September 9th.

The message contained the names, camp numbers, and hometowns of seven prisoners from Auschwitz. They wanted to leave behind a sign of their existence, certain they would die there, but incredibly, several of the people on the list survived the Holocaust.

Hawaii - Vietnam - USA -

In 1979, during their vacation in Hawaii, a couple decided to throw some champagne bottles into the Pacific Ocean. Within each bottle, they placed their address and included a one-dollar bill for return postage, along with a promise of a reward to the finder.

After four years, they were contacted by a former Vietnamese soldier attempting to flee their country. In the end, the couple supported the refugee and his family in moving to the United States.

In 1914, Private Thomas Hughes, a British soldier, tragically passed away in France just two days after throwing a message-filled bottle into the English Channel for his wife.

The following message was sent: "Dear Wife, I am writing this note on this boat and dropping it into the sea just to see if it will reach you. If it does, sign this envelope on the right hand bottom corner where it says receipt. Put the date and hour of receipt and your name where it says signature and look after it well. Ta ta sweet, for the present. Your Hubby."

A fisherman discovered the bottle in 1999, and although Pvt. Thomas Hughes' wife was already dead, the message eventually reached his 86-year-old daughter.

In 1956, a Swedish man seeking companionship cast a bottle into the sea. The note said, "To someone beautiful and far away," providing his contact information.

Glasgow School of Navigation -

In 1914, Scotland's Glasgow School of Navigation conducted an experiment by throwing over 1,889 bottles into the sea. The purpose was to investigate currents and tides, with each bottle containing cards for participants to complete and send back to the school.

In 2011, a fisherman from Scotland found one of the bottles. His finding earned him a place in the Guinness World Record book for discovering the oldest recorded message in a bottle from the modern era (at that time).

On Christmas Day in 1945, a US soldier threw a message in a bottle into the ocean as he returned home after serving in WWII.

After eight months, a milkmaid from Ireland found the bottle and responded to the message of the young soldier. They continued to communicate by letter for seven years until he finally made his way to Ireland to meet her. However, their romance sadly concluded after their meeting.

Queen Elizabeth I of England created the position of the royal "Uncorker of Ocean Bottles" due to her belief in the importance of messages found in bottles.

During the Queen's reign, only the Uncorker of Ocean Bottles was allowed to unseal a vessel holding a written note. Breaking this law was an offense punishable by death.

A mother from France, mourning the loss of her son, threw a bottle into the English Channel. The bottle held children's clothing, a message, and lilies.

A couple of weeks later, two women discovered it on a beach in Kent, England. Karen Liebreich, one of them, authored a book entitled 'The Letter in the Bottle Book' about the incident. Eventually, the mother and the women had a long-awaited meeting several years later.

In 2009, a couple in Texas came across a bottle with the instruction to "break bottle" at Padre Island National Seashore.

A postcard was discovered within the contents of the bottle. The postcard contained instructions to be returned to the Galveston Laboratory of the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. From 1962 to 1963, the laboratory released a total of 7,863 bottles into the Gulf of Mexico. The purpose was to investigate the influence of currents on shrimp populations.
