The January leak by a newspaper of secret plans drawn up by the German government preparing for a potential Russian attack against NATO has sent alarm bells ringing across Europe and beyond. The grim scenario reveals step by step how President Vladimir Putin could escalate the conflict in Ukraine to all-out war in just 18 months. Worryingly, these doomsday predictions come on the back of concerns expressed by several European leaders of just that—a potential conflict between NATO and Russian forces. So, how concerned should we be?

On April 11, 2024, the Swedish government announced that they are investing 385 million kronor (US$36 million) into strengthening the country's bomb shelters, emergency services, and civil defense. This comes one month after Sweden was finally accepted into NATO, and it seems that they are serious about preparing for the worst. In January,  Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin made the shocking statement that "there could be war in Sweden." A month later, the commander of the Swedish armed forces advised the population to "mentally prepare for war." They are now taking expensive steps to bolster the country's network of bomb shelters, increase medical supplies in Swedish hospitals, and prepare supplies of drinking water. Bohlin also stated that the funds would be used to improve the ability of the emergency services to respond in times of conflict, and strengthen the country's cybersecurity.
