What's to come in the 2019 AFLW season -

There is a heap of excitement now that the 2019 AFLW season schedule release and Draft Picks have been finalised. Although there has been some criticism towards season being shortened, there has been an expansion with two added teams this year.

AFLW - Officially kicking off on Saturday, February 2, 2019, Round 1 will see Geelong vs. Collingwood in the season opener. As well as Adelaide vs. Western Bulldogs later that day.

Sunday -

North Melbourne vs. Carlton, Melbourne vs. Fremantle, and Brisbane vs, Greater Western Sydney will also play Round 1 on February 3.

Season - The 2019 season will consist of seven rounds, the preliminary finals and then the grand final over nine weeks.

Chloe Molloy - Collingwood's Chloe Molloy won the 2018 Best and Fairest award, however in September she suffered a Lisfranc injury that needed surgery, cutting her from the 2019 AFLW season.

Last season - Even though this season there are ten teams participating, two more than last season, the amount of rounds has remained the same.

2017 - The first season of the Women's AFL began in February 2017 with eight teams.

Grand Final - In both the 2017 and 2018, the Brisbane Lions made it to the Grand Finals, and both years came runners-up.

Crows - The inaugural AFLW premiership went to the Adelaide Crows at the 2017 grand final.

Western Bulldogs - And the 2018 premiership cup went to the Western Bulldogs.

Katie Brennan - Household name and Western Bulldog's captain, Brennan was suspended for one week for her involvement in a sling tackle. This meant she missed out on playing the 2018 Grand Final.

2020 - It has already been confirmed that four more teams will be added for the 2020 AFLW season.

Teams - This would bring the AFLW teams to a collective 14 in 2020, Gold Coast Suns, Richmond Tigers, St Kilda, and West Coast Eagles will be joining the next season.

Draft picks - In the AFLW, each player has a one year contract and so every year the draft pool is brimming. The entire process is fascinating to watch.

Rookies - This year there is also a compulsory rule for rookies - they must be multi-code athletes who have not played organised football for three years.

Geelong Cats - Round one draft picks consisted of three Geelong players: Nina Morrison, Sophie Van De Huevel and Rebecca Webster. As well as rookies Maddy McMahon and Georgie Rankin.

Carlton - Round one draft picks for Carlton consisted of Madison Prespakis, as well as rookies Chloe Dalton and Brooke Walker.

Fremantle Dockers - Rookies Brianna Moyle and Angelique Stannett made it on the team, and round one draft picks for Fremantle consisted of Jasmin Stewart.

Collingwood Magpies - Round one draft picks consisted of three Collingwood players: Jordyn Allen and Katie Lynch. As well as rookies Sharni Layton and Sarah Rowe.

Melbourne Demons - Rookies Chantel Emonson and Shae Sloane made it on the team, and round one draft picks for Melbourne consisted of Tyla Hanks.

Adelaide Crows -

Nikki Gore was chosen in the first round of draft picks, and Ailish Considine and Maisie Nankivell were the rookies chosen for Adelaide.

Western Bulldogs - Rookies Tessa Boyd and Celine Moody made it on the team, and round one draft picks for Melbourne consisted of Eleanor Brown.

Greater Western Sydney - Alyce Parker was chosen in the first round of draft picks, and Yvonne Bonner and Taylah Davies were the rookies chosen for GWS. North Melbourne Kangaroos also acquired rookies Tayla Roberts and Jessie Williams.
