Thirteen miners have been found dead inside a gold mine in Peru, days after being kidnapped by a criminal gang attempting to seize control of the site.

Authorities believe the victims, employees of the Peruvian mining company Poderosa, were executed at close range, with a disturbing video (allegedly filmed by the captors) circulating on social media.

The tragedy underscores the growing threat of organized crime in Peru’s mining sector. Poderosa, which employs around 8,000 people, criticized law enforcement for failing to act, warning that illegal mining operations have taken over several of its sites since 2020. The company claims these criminal groups are operating with "absolute impunity."

For many people around the world, there is no other option. These nations struggle with a dark underbelly of criminality while the surface may seem appealing and beautiful. Think about the lush tropical rainforests of Brazil, the beautiful savannas of South Africa, and the crystal-clear waters of the Bahamas.

Many of these countries have battled the existence of gang life and the violence that follows them.
