Lake Lanier -

Lake Lanier, officially known as Lake Sidney Lanier, is a reservoir that can be found in the US state of Georgia. It has around 680 miles (1,094 km) of shoreline that has suffered a dark history.

Origins -

The lake was created in 1956 by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and was designed to provide hydroelectric power and water supply for Atlanta. The lake’s creation is marred by travesty, since it involved flooding entire communities, displacing residents, and leaving a troubling legacy beneath the water.

Displacement -

The creation of Lake Lanier required the flooding of numerous communities, displacing families, businesses, and even cemeteries. This traumatic displacement left an indelible mark on the region, with many locals feeling a lingering connection to the submerged towns.

Submerged structures -

As Lake Lanier filled, the remnants of entire towns (including homes, roads, and bridges) were left underwater. These submerged structures remain eerily intact and fuel stories of the past that refuse to stay buried.

Burial grounds -

Not all cemeteries were relocated when Lake Lanier was formed, which has led to speculation that graves were submerged and disturbed. Ever since, legends have arisen of restless spirits trapped beneath the water, unable to find peace in their watery graves.

Oscarville -

A thriving town known as Oscarville once stood where Lake Lanier now sits. It was formed during the 1800s, and was a bustling Black community of bricklayers, carpenters, and blacksmiths.

Massacre -

In 1912, a 19-year-old white woman named Mae Crow was found dead in the woods near Oscarville. A horrific racial conflict ensued that led to the lynching and displacement of the Black community. Pictured here are the residents who were accused of her death.

Buford Dam -

Decades later, Buford Dam was built, and the town of Oscarville was submerged by Lake Lanier and permanently removed from the map. To this day, the town remains buried beneath the water, adding to the lake’s dark and haunting history.

Underwater forest -

When Oscarville was submerged, much of the forest surrounding it was submerged as well. Local divers have reported swimming between the trees as though traveling through an underwater forest that never decomposes and never rots.

Mysterious drownings -

Since its creation, Lake Lanier has been the site of over 200 drownings, many of which remain unexplained. The lake’s high number of deaths, coupled with the difficulty in recovering bodies, has led to rumors that vengeful spirits are to blame.

Unrecovered bodies -

The lake’s murky depths make it difficult to recover the bodies of those who drown, with many remaining lost forever. Speculation has arisen that these souls haunt the lake as they seek closure.

Lady of the Lake -

The Lady of the Lake is one of Lake Lanier’s most famous ghost stories. Witnesses often report seeing a spectral woman near Dawsonville Highway, believed to be the spirit of Delia Parker Young, who drowned in a tragic car accident along with her sister, Susie Roberts, in 1958.

Separation -

While Delia’s body was found 18 months later beneath Jerry D. Jackson Bridge, Susie’s body was only found in 1990 after workers dredged the bottom of the lake and uncovered her bones trapped inside the wreckage of a 1954 Ford.

Boating accidents -

Numerous boating accidents have occurred on Lake Lanier, with survivors often describing strange phenomena like boats capsizing without reason or equipment suddenly failing. These incidents have sparked rumors that paranormal forces are at play.

Over the years, several people have also mysteriously disappeared while swimming or boating on Lake Lanier, with no trace left behind.

Sonar -

When people go missing in the lake, game wardens normally attempt to locate their bodies using boat-mounted sonar. Most of the bodies recovered do not have flotation devices.

Alcohol -

Many of the disappearances in the lake are not attributed to supernatural phenomena, but rather alcohol. Tourists and visitors to the area often become heavily inebriated and end up drowning in the water.

The lake is also situated near Forsyth County, which was once part of the Cherokee Nation before the indigenous people were forcibly removed by the federal government as part of the Trail of Tears. This has only added to the urban legend of the lake.

During the 1996 Summer Olympics, Lake Lanier’s north end was used for the rowing and sprint canoeing events. It has since hosted many other events, including the 2003 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.
