Barack Obama's legacy is defined by his role as the first African American president, his response to the international economic downturn known as the Great Recession, and the landmark Affordable Healthcare Act, the so-called "Obamacare."
His presidency, which spanned two terms from 2009 to 2017, saw a series of other significant shifts in policy, notably environmental regulation and foreign diplomacy. But his time in the White House was also marked by disappointment and setbacks, including failed immigration reform and failure to pass gun control.
Nevertheless, when Barack Obama left office, his approval rating was hovering around 60%, and the public rated him highly in comparison with other recent presidents.
Today, the former president is nurturing the next generation of leaders across the US and internationally through the Obama Foundation while supporting Democratic candidates and advocating for voting rights and structural democratic reforms.
