Money can buy many things, but it can't cheat death. There are, however, a select few people who have experienced the miracle of survival, and some have even gained great insight from it.

Salman Rushdie has faced a life-altering, near-death experience as the famed author was stabbed repeatedly on August 12 at a speaking engagement in western New York. Hadi Matar, 24, is accused of stabbing Rushdie at the Chautauqua Institution, leaving three stab wounds to the right side of his neck, four stab wounds to his stomach, a puncture wound to his right eye, a puncture wound to his chest, and a laceration on his right thigh, according to Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt, CNN reports. Rushdie, 75, was airlifted to a hospital in northwestern Pennsylvania and underwent emergency surgery. He remains hospitalized, however a law enforcement official said on August 16 that he is now awake and "articulate."

Matar pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury with a deadly weapon. He was refused bail and remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail, where he awaits a potential 32-year sentence if convicted.
