Global pop star Shakira, who had been accused of committing tax fraud against Spanish authorities involving the equivalent of nearly US$16.3 million, is now set to receive compensation totaling around $70 million.

The case revolved around determining whether Shakira was a resident of Spain or the Bahamas for tax purposes between the years of 2012 and 2014. While the singer listed the Bahamas as her official residence for tax purposes at the time, prosecutors argued that she was still living in Spain with her then-partner, Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué.

The court found the state couldn’t prove that Shakira spent more than 183 days in Spain in 2011, which was a requirement that needed to be met for her to be considered a tax resident of the country.

Indeed, Shakira has been in the headlines for decades, as she remains one of the world's most popular music stars and a fashion icon to boot. She's a singer, songwriter, and dancer, and is as busy as ever as she raises her two young children. After a tough couple of years, she released a new album in 2024, 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,' her first in seven years. Now, a world tour is underway.
