A lawsuit of her own
- After Markle's father shared a private letter she wrote to him with the Daily Mail on Sunday, the Duchess of Sussex sued the newspaper in 2019 for publishing it without her permission. Her legal team argued that the publication breached the Data Protection Act through misuse of private information and copyright infringement, and in 2021, the court ruled in her favor, agreeing that it was an unnecessary invasion of her privacy.

Meghan Markle wins defamation lawsuit filed by half-sister Samantha after judge dismisses case
© BrunoPress
Meghan Markle has just beaten a defamation lawsuit filed by her half-sister Samantha Markle after a judge dismissed the case on March 31. Samantha filed the lawsuit against the Duchess of Sussex for the explosive interview she and Prince Harry gave Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. Samantha claimed that Meghan made “false and malicious statements” about their relationship, like claiming to be “an only child," and about her “rags-to-royalty” narrative, according to court documents obtained by Page Six.
Samantha's filing added, “The defamatory implication is that Plaintiff had no relationship whatsoever with her sister Meghan, they were virtual strangers and that Plaintiff has created a lucrative career selling false stories to tabloids and television programs when she knows nothing about Defendant’s childhood." She also argued on behalf of their father, Thomas, that Meghan misled the public regarding his absence from her 2018 wedding. The suit added, "Meghan falsely claimed that: (a) she essentially raised herself from virtual poverty; (b) she was forced from the age of 13 to work in a series of low-paying jobs to ‘make ends meet.'" Samantha also claimed her half-sister “published and disseminated false and malicious statements about the Plaintiff in New York Times best-selling book, ‘Finding Freedom,'” which she called “nothing more than a book of lies.”
US District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell ruled in favor of Meghan, however, writing that the duchess' statements to Oprah are an "opinion of her own childhood" and thus cannot be proved false, and that the duchess could not be held liable for a book she did not publish. Could this finally be the end of her family's efforts to drag her name through the mud?
We all know the media can be borderline obsessive about celebrities' personal lives, but in the case of Meghan Markle's family, the press is almost justified. Click through this gallery to learn more about the absurd antics of Markle’s kooky kin.
