Meet the stars who have battled cancer
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova diagnosed with throat cancer and second breast cancer
© Getty Images
It's estimated that 10 million people die of cancer every year, and nearly twice as many people are diagnosed with the disease. It's an incredibly common and often devastating illness that has touched most of us in one way or another. Even still, it's surprising to learn just how many famous faces have battled cancer. Thankfully, many of them have lived to tell the tale and inspire us with their perseverance in the face of such adversity.
Martina Navratilova already battled her way out of breast cancer in 2010, but now adversity has struck again, and twice as hard. A spokesperson for the nine-time Wimbledon champion told People that Navratilova has been diagnosed with both stage 1 throat and breast cancer, after seeking medical attention for an enlarged lymph node in her neck. The 66-year-old tennis legend told The Sunday Times she's trying to stay positive. "This double whammy is serious but still fixable," she said. "I'm hoping for a favorable outcome. It's going to stink for a while but I'll fight with all I have got."
Click through the gallery to learn more about the stars who won their battles with cancer, the ones who have not won the fight yet, and the unlucky few who ultimately lost theirs.
