Harrison Ford has opened up about his struggle with depression during his college years, revealing how an unexpected acting class helped change the course of his life.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter's podcast 'Awards Chatter,' in an episode released on April 9, the 83-year-old described a period when he felt deeply unwell, saying, “I was more than depressed. I think I was ill… socially ill, psychologically not well.”
Reflecting back on studying at Ripon College in Wisconsin, Ford recalled spending days isolated in bed with little motivation. In an effort to improve his grades, he enrolled in a drama class—unaware it would require performing. The experience came as a surprise, but ultimately became a turning point.
Ford said he found a sense of belonging among storytellers. “They were telling stories about life… and some of them were exceptional in their capacity to understand human behavior,” he said, adding, “It really changed my world, changed my life.” This ultimately set him on the path to a decades-long acting career.
