Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have donated US$25,000 to a GoFundMe supporting the family of actor James Van Der Beek following his death from colorectal cancer on February 11.
The contribution was made on February 12 to a fundraiser created by friends of Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly. The campaign initially aimed to raise $250,000, but quickly surpassed $1.8 million, drawing tens of thousands of donations.
Van Der Beek famously portrayed aspiring filmmaker Dawson Leery on ‘Dawson’s Creek,’ a character who idolized Spielberg throughout the series—a connection the director acknowledged during a recent cast reunion held to benefit the actor.
