King Charles III: a life in waiting
King Charles, 73, has ascended to the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II
King Charles, formerly the Prince of Wales, was the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history, up until September 8, 2022. On that date, his mother Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96 after reigning for 70 years. The crown was immediately passed to Charles upon her death, transforming him into King Charles III after decades of waiting in the wings.
However, he was doing a lot more than waiting. Charles is a hugely popular member of the royal family, and one of its hardest working! Charles has carried a heavy load of royal duties for most of his life, often assisted by his wife, Camilla, who is now Queen Consort.
