On July 2, US Olympic canoeist David "Davey" Hearn was charged with vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Hearn was indicted in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on a felony charge alleging he caused over US$1,000 worth of damage.
The charge comes amid recent statements by President Donald Trump, who, without evidence to support his claims, blamed vandals for the destruction of the pool.
Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, said National Park Service employees witnessed Hearn damaging the pool on June 19 and even tried to stop him. Pirro also alleged that Hearn damaged the sealant from the bottom of the Reflecting Pool.
