Australian singer-songwriter and musician Ashton Irwin of the band 5 Seconds of Summer apparently cheated death in 2014 after worsening appendicitis could have killed him had he not missed a flight. His appendix was near to bursting, and had that happened while he was in the air doctors believe he would have died. Instead, it was removed in time at a Sydney hospital.

Even the fittest and healthiest can sometimes succumb to gallbladder trouble. Rosemary Conley, the English businesswoman, author, and broadcaster on exercise and health, whose 1988 book 'The Hip & Thigh Diet' sold more than two million copies, had hers removed in 1993.
