Prince Harry appeared on the verge of tears during his testimony on January 21, part of the latest chapter of a legal battle against tabloid publisher Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) over privacy issues. He declared that the tabloids have made wife Meghan Markle’s life “absolutely miserable” and that his own life has been “commercialized” since he was a teenager.
The Duke of Sussex is leading a group of seven high-profile claimants, including singer Elton John and actress Elizabeth Hurley, in a legal battle against methods used by tabloids to spy on their lives. Harry himself has actually publicly revealed many secrets of the royal family. Indeed, after the explosive release of his book in January 2023, it seemed like all of the royal family's dirty secrets were out in the open (again).
The supposed environment of social pressure, mental health stigma, and even racism was put forward for all to examine. And yet there has been ample evidence in the past that being a royal is not all it's cracked up to be. Given the media scrutiny, lack of freedom, and lack of support for those struggling within the family, it's no wonder that several royals have spoken out about struggles with their mental health.
