Denzel Washington has revealed the true story behind his name's pronunciation. Appearing on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on September 2, the actor explained that his first name was originally pronounced “Denzil,” the same as his father, Denzel Hayes Washington, Sr.
Washington recalled that his mother made the change to avoid confusion when both father and son responded at once. “My mother would say ‘Denzil’ and we both show up,” he told Kimmel. “So she said, ‘From now on you’re 'Denzel.'”
