Fans of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ are in for a treat—and perhaps a bidding war. Heritage Auctions has announced that the Wicked Witch of the West’s black hat, worn by actress Margaret Hamilton in the 1939 film, will go up for auction on December 9 and 10. The sale will take place both online and at the company’s Dallas headquarters, coinciding with the theatrical release of ‘Wicked: For Good.'
The wool hat, designed by legendary MGM costume designer Gilbert Adrian, stands nearly 14 inches (35.5 cm) tall, with a 19.5-inch (49.5 cm) brim and a 22-inch (56 cm) chin strap Hamilton used during flying scenes. According to Heritage Auctions, the hat was swapped in early during production when the original version was deemed “not scary enough.”
