Alec Baldwin
- Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on the set of his film 'Rust' and accidentally killed the director of photography, 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins, while also injuring the director Joel Souza. There is much mystery and suspicion about how and why the prop gun was loaded with a live round rather than a blank, but a fatal mistake was made somewhere along the line. Baldwin has stated unequivocally that he did not know there was a real bullet in the gun and that firing the gun was an accident. The film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has accused the supplier of providing live rounds rather than blanks and says that dangerous corners were cut on set to save money. Hutchins' family sued Baldwin and others involved in the accident but came to a settlement in 2022. "I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin)," her father, Matthew Hutchins, said in a statement about the settlement. "All of us believe Halyna's death was a terrible accident.

Celebrities involved in fatal accidents
Prosecutors have dropped the charges against Alec Baldwin in 'Rust' shooting case, for now
©
Getty Images

The lives of the rich and famous are glossed over one headline at a time, but there are some mistakes they can't erase. The ultimate mistake was made on October 21, 2021, when a prop gun on the set of the film 'Rust' misfired and killed 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. But whose mistake was it? Actor Alec Baldwin was the one holding the gun, and on-set armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for setting it up. In the year following the accident, there were lawsuits, accusations, and a great deal of public debate.
On January 18, 2023, Santa Fe prosecutors announced that both Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed would be charged with involuntary manslaughter. District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies declared, "On my watch, no one is above the law, and everyone deserves justice." However, on April 20, prosecutors shared the update that they had decided to drop the charges against Baldwin. "New facts were revealed that demand further investigation and forensic analysis," they explained. This doesn't mean that Baldwin is in the clear, though. "This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled." The charges against Gutierrez-Reed remain unchanged.
