Angel Reese of the LSU Tigers, who recently defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes in the NCAA women’s basketball national championship, wasn't prepared to become the leading sports headline after she threw up John Cena's famed 'You can't see me' move towards Iowa's Caitlin Clark during the waning seconds of the match. Reese was instantly lambasted online, with many accusing her of being unsportsmanlike in the crudest terms. Yet Clark did the very same move during the Elite Eight game against Louisville and hardly received any criticism at all, highlighting the clear racial bias of the critics.

The media began to pit the young athletes against each other until Clark cleared the alleged feud up in an interview with ESPN. "I think the biggest thing is we're all competitive. We all show our emotions in a different way," she said. "Angel is a tremendous, tremendous player. I have nothing but respect for her. I love her game, the way she rebounds the ball, scores the ball is absolutely incredible. I'm a big fan of her and even the entire LSU team." She added of the Cena gesture, "I don't think there should be any criticism for what she did. I honestly didn't see it when the game was going on and like I said, I haven't been on social media really at all."

After the game, Reese pointed out the double standard of the criticism and said, "This is for the girls that look like me," Of First Lady Jill Biden's offer to Iowa to join LSU on a visit  to the White House, Clark added in her interview that she wouldn't be going as it is an honor historically reserved only for the winning team, thus squashing any other chance of a double standard dividing the two young women.

There’s nothing the media loves more than a good 'catfight.' Whether it’s because of a supposed common love interest or the belief that two women at the top must be jealous of each other, we are constantly seeing headlines inciting feuds between female celebrities. Equally successful and talented women are assumed to be fighting for supremacy rather than showing each other respect and admiration. If they’re not explicitly expressing adoration, then there must be drama behind closed doors...

Why is this so often the case? One explanation is that such stories sell magazines and get clicks. Unfortunately, these made-up dramas perpetuate the stereotype that women are spiteful and don't work well together. These types of stories have been told in film and tabloids since the beginning of time. And while women are always the main characters, they aren’t usually the ones creating the narrative.
