CELEBRITY Intolerance

In recent years, the fact that racial discrimination is still a problem has been gaining acknowledgment all over the world. People of color have always known that our society is not "post-racial," even though those for whom race is not an issue might like to think it is. Police violence against Black people was finally recognized by the world during the summer of 2020 as the Black Lives Matter movement reached a fever pitch. Anti-Asian hate crimes saw a major increase as the COVID-19 virus spread, with the US president referring to it as the "Chinese virus." These incidents have made us more aware that racism and discrimination are still prevalent in every corner of society, even among the most famous and successful people in the world.

Many celebrities have shared stories of the shocking prejudice they have encountered, from childhood to the height of their fame. Most recently, actress Moses Ingram has opened up about the racist backlash she has faced since Disney's 'Star Wars' spin-off 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' began airing. Ingram plays a villainous character called Reva Sevander in the TV series. Within a week of the first episodes being released, Ingram revealed that she had received “hundreds” of racist and misogynistic messages. Many of them expressed prejudice towards her for her race and gender mixed with vitriol towards her evil character. Ingram took to Instagram to share a few examples and commented that she's grateful to fans who are capable of understanding that actors are not their characters. However, she admitted that she was feeling "dejected" and a little powerless.

"There’s nothing anybody can do to stop this hate, and so I question what my purpose is in even being here in front of you saying that this is happening,” Ingram said. “I think the thing that bothers me is that like sort of this feeling that I’ve had inside of myself — which no one has told me — but this feeling of like ‘I’ve just got to shut up and take it,’ you know?” Within hours, the official Star Wars Twitter account shared a message of support for Ingram: "We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold. If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist."
