Ed Sheeran revealed that he has not owned a mobile phone since 2015, explaining the decision during a concert in Sydney, Australia, on February 14. The British singer-songwriter said he stopped carrying a mobile phone after being sued in a US$100 million copyright case over his 2014 hit ‘Thinking Out Loud.’

As part of the legal process, Sheeran was required to hand over his electronic devices for review. He told the crowd that powering his old phone back on years later felt like opening a “time machine,” uncovering messages dating back to 2007. The experience inspired his song ‘Old Phone’ from his 2025 album ‘Play.’

Sheeran ultimately won the eight-year lawsuit in 2023, when a New York jury ruled that he had not copied Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic ‘Let’s Get It On.’ Still, he said the ordeal changed his relationship with technology, and he now relies solely on email.
