The Met Gala, formerly the Costume Institute Gala, is one of the most popular see-or-be-seen events of the year. With all of the biggest names in attendance, everyone gets together to "ooh" and "ahh" at the creativity involved in each star's attire. However, the Met Gala hasn't always looked like it does today, and the fashion has been getting bigger and better throughout the years.
Sadly, the event which usually takes place on the first Monday of May was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the theme was supposed to have been "About Time: Fashion and Duration." Now, to make up for lost time, the Costume Institute has announced a two-part Met Gala for 2021 and 2022.
This year’s theme is "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," and a smaller-scale celebration is tentatively planned for September 13, 2021. The second part, "In America: An Anthology of Fashion," is scheduled to take place on May 5, 2022.
According to Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, the theme will celebrate American designers, as well cultural, political and social events that have occurred during the pandemic, from the rise of social justice movements to issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, Glamour reports. No hosts have been announced yet.
The event will certainly see a distinctive shift in fashion this year, so to prepare yourself, click through to see the evolution of celebrities' style throughout Met Galas past!
