The hoop earring has been on a long and colorful journey for centuries, and it's still evolving to this day. Hoops are a pretty common accessory that many people wear and don't think much about, but it wasn't always this way. People from Black and Latinx communities have had to fight stigma from outsiders who called their style "ghetto," and reclaim their right to wear hoop earrings without judgment.
This simple accessory was a symbol of Black power in the 1960s and 1970s. It guaranteed pirates a proper burial in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was a symbol of royal status in ancient Egypt. And there's more!
