Salt, or sodium chloride, is arguably the most popular ingredient in cooking. It's certainly one of the most essential, used not only in flavoring foods but preserving them as well. Overuse of salt, however, can be harmful to our health. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about sodium consumption. According to the organization, adults globally consume an average of approximately 4.31 grams of sodium per day, more than twice the WHO's recommended limit of less than two grams. But in some countries, per-capita salt consumption is alarmingly high, actually up to eight times more than the suggested intake, according to World Population Review.
