The recent health scare surrounding an outbreak of hantavirus onboard the MV Hondius has again prompted questions as to why germs and diseases spread so quickly on cruise ships. Several passengers were infected with the virus, with three sadly succumbing to the disease.

Indeed, recent history has recorded a number of infectious diseases spreading rapidly in the confines of cruise ships. But why exactly are these vessels prone to such outbreaks, and what's being done to limit the risks?
