Authorities in China are investigating reports

of formaldehyde being used illegally to preserve the freshness of cabbages for human consumption. Formaldehyde is an organic compound, a colorless gas with a distinct, pungent odor.

Small amounts are produced naturally by flora and fauna. But it's also manufactured globally in huge quantities for industrial use.

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, meaning it has the potential to cause cancer. Why, then, is the application of formaldehyde so ubiquitous?

In this gallery, we examine the use of formaldehyde and detail some of the products it's found in.
