With rapid advancements in modern technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is being widely integrated into all aspects of human life—particularly health care. AI has been used to assist surgeons in a series of high-risk surgical procedures, including the removal of a brain tumor and bowel resection surgery.
AI tools can also be used to detect anatomy and subtle disease features that may otherwise go undetected by the human eye. And its application in post-operative care is able to detect if a patient is at risk of complications that may endanger their recovery.
The implementation of AI in a surgical environment is challenging. And its use has also raised ethical concerns, not least the question of accountability and liability. While AI is becoming a highly valuable tool, health professionals insist that its application is still subject to strict medical oversight. All agree, however, that AI is here to stay.
