Alcohol is one of the leading causes of cancer in Europe, and experts say stronger government action to reduce drinking could prevent thousands of new cases and deaths each year.

In the European Union, the region with the highest alcohol consumption in the world, more than 111,000 new cancer cases in 2020 were linked to alcohol, according to a review by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Globally, alcohol was associated with an estimated 741,000 cancer cases, with men making up nearly 70% of those affected.
