Scientists have identified a potential new way to slow memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study published on February 8. Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory found that lowering the activity of an enzyme called PTP1B helped reduce cognitive decline in mice with the condition.

The study showed that limiting PTP1B improved the brain’s ability to clear amyloid-beta plaques, protein build-ups closely linked to Alzheimer’s progression. While the findings are based on animal research and not yet tested in humans, scientists said the approach could support future treatments aimed at slowing the disease and improving quality of life.

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Click through the gallery to learn more about the condition and its ongoing research.
