Polycystic ovary syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, has officially been renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). Experts say the new name better reflects the condition’s hormonal, metabolic, and reproductive impact, moving beyond the misleading focus on ovarian cysts.
The update aims to improve awareness, diagnosis, and long-term care for millions worldwide. It follows 14 years of collaboration between specialists and patients, and was formally published in The Lancet on May 12.
The updated name also shines a spotlight on a condition that is often misunderstood despite affecting millions. The syndrome can cause symptoms such as weight gain, skin issues, irregular periods, and fertility challenges, often emerging in the late teens or early twenties. Several celebrities have also spoken openly about living with the condition.
