Dmitry Nuyanzin, a 30-year-old fitness coach and influencer from Orenburg, Russia, has died of cardiac arrest after attempting an extreme binge-eating experiment meant to showcase his new weight-loss program.

He reportedly consumed about 10,000 calories a day for several weeks as he tried to put on more than 50 lbs (approximately 22.7 kg). His goal was to later shed the weight using his own training plan, according to translated posts on Russian social media cited by the Daily Mail.

Nuyanzin began feeling ill during the challenge and canceled his training sessions, telling friends he intended to seek medical attention. He passed away in his sleep from cardiac arrest.

While Nuyanzin’s challenge was a deliberate stunt, the idea of consuming unusually large quantities of food also brings attention to binge eating disorder (BED)—a serious and common medical condition that involves recurring episodes of uncontrolled eating and which can have significant physical and emotional impacts.
