The UK's Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported on November 29 that a new case of the mpox variant, clade Ib, has been detected in England, marking the fifth confirmed case in recent weeks. The agency emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low. The clade Ib variant is part of the global health emergency declared by the World Health Organization in August. The latest case, identified in Leeds, involves an individual who recently returned from Uganda, where community transmission of this variant is occurring.
The clade Ib variant has also been confirmed in other countries, including the United States, where the CDC has reported its first case. It has been circulating in other countries like Germany, India, Kenya, Sweden, Thailand, and Zimbabwe. Initially, the clade I outbreak took place in Africa, contributing to the development of subclade Ib. While the risk remains low, public awareness is crucial.
