A new blood test called Galleri has shown promising results in detecting more than 50 types of cancer early, often before symptoms appear. A major US trial found that the test correctly identified cancer in 61.6% of people flagged with a “cancer signal” and accurately pinpointed the affected organ in 92% of cases. It also ruled out cancer in 99.6% of healthy participants.
The Galleri test works by detecting DNA fragments shed by cancer cells into the bloodstream. Over half of the cancers found were in early stages, and adding Galleri to routine screening increased cancer detection more than seven-fold. The test is currently being evaluated by the NHS, with results expected next year.
Throughout history, disease has sparked both fear and innovation. Indeed, advances in medicine and technology have helped develop life-saving treatments, often shaped by the challenges of their time.
