Misconceptions

Nearly 90% of autistic adults over the age of 40 in the United Kingdom remain undiagnosed, according to the largest study of its kind published on August 29 in the Annual Review of Developmental Psychology. The report highlights that between 89% and 97% of this group have never received a diagnosis, leaving them without the recognition or support that could improve their quality of life.

Researchers warn that undiagnosed autistic adults face disproportionately higher risks of poor physical and mental health, social isolation, suicidal ideation, and even reduced life expectancy. Many also struggle with employment, relationships, and major life events such as menopause and retirement.

While autism is now more commonly identified in childhood, older generations grew up in an era with limited awareness and few diagnostic tools, therefore experts are calling for urgent investment in campaigns, diagnostic pathways, and support services to address this hidden crisis.

As autism identification improves in younger people, the study underscores how much confusion and stigma still remain. Misconceptions can leave autistic individuals feeling isolated or misunderstood.
