Scientists in France have identified a new, extremely rare blood type, so far found in only one person. Dubbed “Gwada negative” after the woman’s Guadeloupean roots, it’s now officially recognized as the 48th blood group system.
Discovered by the French Blood Establishment (EFS), the unique type, formally named PIGZ, was confirmed through DNA sequencing. The woman, now in her sixties, is currently the only known person in the world with this blood type, meaning she is the only one compatible with her own blood.
Knowing your blood type is essential, especially when donating or receiving blood. A mismatch can trigger serious immune reactions, including clotting, kidney failure, or even death. Fortunately, modern testing has made transfusions much safer.
Studies also suggest links between blood type and certain health risks, such as multiple sclerosis or diabetes. So, curious about what your blood type might say about your health? Click through to learn more.
