On September 4, Endico Potatoes Inc., in coordination with the FDA, initiated a recall of its Endico brands of frozen peas and carrots and mixed vegetables due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
Distributed between July 18 and August 4 in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Florida, the 2.5-lb (1.13-kg) bags are being refunded. No illnesses have been reported, but high-risk groups should be especially cautious.
Listeria infection, also known as listeriosis, is caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. While eating food contaminated with listeria isn't serious in most healthy people, it can cause serious illness, especially for pregnant individuals and those with weakened immune systems. According to the CDC, listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the US, killing about 260 a year.
