More than 55,000 pounds of frozen blueberries have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, US federal regulators have announced.

The United States Food and Drug Administration upgraded a previous February 12 recall to a Class I warning on February 25, indicating there is reasonable probability that exposure could cause serious health consequences or even death.

The recall affects 55,689 pounds of individually quick-frozen blueberries produced by Oregon Potato Company and distributed in Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and parts of Canada. The affected products include 30-pound cases and large bulk totes with specific lot codes and 2027 expiration dates.

Listeria infections can cause fever, diarrhea, and vomiting in healthy adults, but may lead to severe or fatal illness in pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
