Spain’s government has proposed banning under-16s from social media and tightening rules on hateful content, resulting in a clash with X-owner and far-right figure Elon Musk. On February 3, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared that the measures are necessary to protect children from what he called a “digital wild west” and a “failed state where laws are ignored and crimes are tolerated.”

The proposal received an immediate response from Musk, who used X to call Sánchez a “tyrant” and a “true fascist totalitarian,” escalating tensions between Madrid and one of the world’s most influential and controversial tech figures. The exchange followed Sánchez’s criticism of Musk for amplifying disinformation online about Spain’s decision to regularize 500,000 undocumented people.
