The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated a nationwide egg recall to its highest severity level after finding multiple strains of salmonella in a processing facility linked to the Black Sheep Egg Company. The company voluntarily withdrew more than six million eggs from shelves in September, following FDA tests that revealed 40 environmental samples contaminated with seven distinct strains of salmonella, some of which are known to cause serious human illness.

Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and discard any Black Sheep Egg Company products with “Best By” dates between August 7 and October 31, or UPC codes 860010568507 and 860010568538.
