Contamination

Thousands of ready-to-eat pizza and bread products have been recalled in the United States after concerns they may contain metal fragments.

Initiated by food manufacturer Bakkavor on January 19, the recall was classified as Class II on March 23, meaning the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects. The recall affects more than 25,000 cases distributed across 10 states: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas, and Virginia.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the issue was traced to slow-roasted tomatoes supplied by a vendor, which were found to be potentially contaminated. Affected products include items sold under brands such as HelloFresh, Trader Joe’s, and Harris Teeter, with use-by dates ranging from April 27 through October 15, 2026.

While no widespread injuries have been reported, consumers are urged to check lot numbers and avoid consuming the affected items.

Indeed, most trips to the grocery store used to be simple, but growing concerns over recalls and contamination are changing that. As more products are pulled from shelves, a pattern of risk is emerging across grocery aisles. Click through this gallery to find out what’s behind the rise in food recalls and how to stay safe.
