Brazil's health ministry has confirmed 16 methanol poisoning cases and a reported 209 suspected incidents, mainly in São Paulo and Pernambuco. Authorities warn against consuming illicit alcoholic beverages and are stepping up public health measures to address the growing threat. Methanol poisoning can cause severe health problems, including permanent vision loss or death.

In recent years, methanol poisoning has become an increasing concern in several Southeast Asian countries in particular. Methanol, a liquid used to produce fuel, plastics, and solvents, tastes identical to ethanol, the type of alcohol found in beverages.
