Pollution

France is on high alert as an ongoing heat wave worsens air pollution in several regions, including Marseille, Paris, and parts of the south. This August 11, temperatures reached 109°F (43°C) in Charente and Aude, prompting the national weather service to place 12 departments on red alert and 41 more on orange alert.

Officials have issued ozone pollution emergencies in areas such as Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, restricting traffic to curb emissions. Paris is also facing poor air quality, with monitoring agency Airparif warning of degraded conditions in major cities.

Health authorities are urging residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak pollution hours and limit unnecessary driving.

Air quality significantly impacts health and well-being, yet it often goes unnoticed until it visibly worsens. The Air Quality Index (AQI) offers a vital tool for monitoring pollution levels and protecting communities. Click through this gallery to learn how the AQI works and why it matters.
