A new COVID strain called "Stratus" is spreading across the UK, with two subvariants—XFG and XFG.3—now accounting for a growing number of infections, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). By September 10, cases in England rose 7.6% compared to the previous week, though experts stress there is no evidence that Stratus causes more severe illness than earlier strains.
The World Health Organization has classified XFG as a “variant under monitoring,” noting its global risk is low. Current vaccines remain effective, though scientists are watching mutations that might weaken protection from past infections or vaccines. Some patients have reported unique symptoms, including a hoarse voice, while others describe sore, dry throats.
COVID has continued to evolve since the pandemic began, with new strains like Stratus and Nimbus raising questions about whether the virus is becoming less severe over time. While both have spread widely, the feared surge in hospital admissions has not happened. Experts say this may be one of several signs that COVID-19 is gradually becoming more mild as a disease.
