In February 2025, it was revealed that a woman who as a child had undergone treatment for neuroblastoma was still cancer-free 18 years later. She is the longest known survivor of the disease, which forms in certain types of nerve tissue. More to the point, perhaps, the patient had received chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.
CAR T-cell therapy is more usually applied to those suffering from hematological malignancies, or blood cancers. But in this instance, CAR T-cell therapy successfully targeted a solid tumor—a triumph for medical science!
So, what exactly is CAR T-cell therapy, and how does it work? Click through the following gallery and learn more about this pioneering form of immunotherapy.
